Our Story: The History of Long Roofing
Our name is recognized as a leader in home improvement across the Mid-Atlantic United States. We’ve helped countless families enjoy safer, more beautiful homes. Our business was built on the idea that the right products, outstanding craftsmanship and genuine respect for the customer would translate to success. That idea continues to be proven correct every single day.
A family business
Our story begins in 1945, when Henry “Tots” Long launched Long’s Fence Co. at the corner of 18th St. NE and Rhode Island in Washington, D.C. — not far from the United States National Arboretum. The company’s first office? A decommissioned city bus. It was a modest start, but set in motion the events that would lead to decades of success.
Henry’s son, Robert, wrapped up a stint in the U.S. Merchant Marines in 1948. He returned to the Langdon neighborhood to join the family business he had supported with his service pay.
Robert was driven and had ambitious dreams for Long’s Fence Co. In 1960, he bought the family business from his father and transformed the small but successful venture into a thriving regional operation. The business continued to grow to become a household name for fencing in and around the D.C. area.
The company began to flourish under its new owner. The name was changed to Long Fence®. Long Fence became a national presence in home and commercial fencing. You still see the Long Fence logo today on fences from Baltimore to Warrenton and beyond.
Expanding into the home
John DePaola joined Long Fence as the manager of the ornamental iron division in the late 1980s. He moved into the installation department, was promoted to the position of general manager of automatic gate openers. In less than a decade, John was named vice president of business development.
Robert knew the company had a strong foundation. With nearly 50 years of brand equity built as a fence company, Mr. Long made the crucial decision to establish a home products division. The opportunity was given to John and he rolled out the first new Long brand, Long Windows®.
In 1994, the home products division was renamed Long Fence and Home®. Within two years, Long Fence and Home had shown enough promise to branch off into a separate company. Five years later, Long Kitchens® debuted. More new brands – Long Doors®, Long Siding®, Long Baths® and, eventually, Long Roofing® – followed.
“We have so much fun with this!” John says. “Everyone works hard to get all the kinks out of the process. We really strive hard so that what could be a nightmare project is actually enjoyable for the customer. Our team is perfecting the sales process, the delivery and fulfillment and the customer service processes.”
Long Roofing has been the latest success story for the LONG brand. After experiencing strong success in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, Northern Virginia and West Virginia markets, Long Roofing expanded in 2016 to Virginia’s Richmond metro area, giving Long Roofing a chance to serve hundreds of thousands of additional homeowners.
Long Roofing is now established in New England and more regions are soon to follow. We are proud to offer our Long Windows products in the Boston, Mass.. and New England area, as well.
The Long Roofing story continues
Today, Long Roofing and the Long Fence and Home team have a dedicated staff of product specialists who work diligently to assist homeowners from New England to Virginia. We also have a team of client service representatives who continue to support our customers long after the product is installed.
Throughout all of our growth and change, our mission remains unchanged – to offer and install the finest quality products that allow homeowners to improve their homes and their lives. We are also proud to offer no-nonsense lifetime warranties on almost all of our home products and rock-solid 50-year warranties on our roofs.
The Long family is still involved in the day-to-day operation of the business. Jill Long DePaola — Robert’s daughter and John’s wife — is the company’s executive officer, and the couple’s children play key roles in the company, as well.
Jill led the branding and marketing work behind Long Roofing, allowing what was a division of Long Fence and Home to grow into a major national roofing presence — a true rarity in this industry.
