At home in The Hub: Long Roofing lands in Boston
Dave Normandin, a Boston native and 40-year veteran of the home improvement industry, has worked with Long Roofing since 2011. He became president of the company in late 2016.
Jeff Caron, Long Roofing’s vice president of sales, was a lifelong New Englander before joining Long Roofing earlier this decade. Jeff is approaching 40 years of experience in the home improvement business himself.
Dave and Jeff are coming home.
Long Roofing, one of the leaders in North American residential roofing and the latest success story spawned from a 72-year-old family fencing powerhouse, launched in the Boston metro region earlier this summer. The move into Boston is the latest venture for a company that was recently lauded as the number-one provider of 50-year roofing warranties in North America while expanding its historic Mid-Atlantic roots into new markets across the East Coast.
“We are a little bit different than the average roofer,” Dave says. “I think it’s the reason we’re the fastest growing roofer in the country.”
Fast facts about Long Roofing
- Long Roofing holds SELECT ShingleMaster certification. This accreditation earned by just one percent of roofing professionals in the United States. SELECT ShingleMaster roofers have been rigorously tested and show roofing excellence, quality and knowledge worthy of this prestigious title. You know you are in good hands when Long Roofing is on your roof.
- Long Roofing is the North American leader in peace of mind. This is true: Long Roofing was recently recognized as the top provider of SureStart PLUS® roofing warranties in both the United States and Canada. This 50-year warranty gives homeowners with the Integrity Roof System® peace of mind in knowing that they are getting an industry-leading roof on their home and — on the off-chance there is ever an issue with the installation or roofing materials — the problem will be solved. Long Roofing is committed to 100 percent customer satisfaction.
- We’re leaders in customer service, too. The LONG brand has earned Guildmaster status on home improvement review site GuildQuality.com. The website collected over 6,000 independent reviews from real LONG customers and determined that the company had achieved an overall rating of 4.6 out of five stars — good enough for GuildQuality.com’s highest honor.
“If we’re going to have the Long name on something,” Dave says, “it has to be the best.”
Where does Long Roofing come from?
The LONG name has been recognized as one of the top providers of home improvement services in the Mid-Atlantic region for over 70 years. The business, launched as a fencing company in the heart of Washington, D.C. by the father-son duo of Henry and Robert Long, respectively, in the 1940s, exploded when Robert took the reins in 1960.
That company — Long Fence® — thrived, becoming the regional leader in residential and commercial fencing. To this day, it is nearly impossible to drive through Washington, D.C., Maryland or Virginia without seeing the ubiquitous Long Fence logo.
Under the leadership of now-Long Roofing CEO John DePaola and executive officer Jill Long DePaola, Long Fence branched deeper into the home improvement world in 1994 with the launch of Long Windows.
The out-of-the-gate success of the window division led to several more home services, allowing the newly-dubbed Long Fence and Home to step away from the legacy brand and become a company of its own. To this day, Long Fence and Home continues to provide outstanding window, door and siding services in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, Northern Virginia and West Virginia region.
Trust and peace of mind
Over the past several years, the company identified a serious need for trustworthy and professional roofers. Long Fence and Home filled that gap with the launch of Long Roofing.
“Over the years, we could see that roofing was just different,” John says. “There was tremendous need by homeowners. The gap between the level of professionalism was so big that Long Roofing just stood out. We could see the clear need that told us to focus in this area to be the best we could be. All we had to do was listen to our customers, they would tell us what they wanted.”
Homeowners responded to Long Roofing’s message of quality, honesty and integrity in an industry that sometimes has a poor reputation in all three categories. The roofing business grew exponentially across the Mid-Atlantic and quickly spread to West Virginia.
“We have so much fun with this!” John says. “Everyone works hard to get all the kinks out of the process. We really strive hard so that what could be a nightmare project is actually enjoyable for the customer. Our team is perfecting the sales process, the delivery and fulfillment and the customer service processes. We get rave reviews on our work and that is the ultimate payoff. If your customers love you and know that you care, it makes everything worth it. We only care that we delight those who put their faith in our abilities. Nothing else matters.”
The expansion to Boston and across New England is the next big step for the company.
“The future is extremely bright,” Jill says. “We have a dedicated staff of product specialists who assist homeowners in their decision-making process, and a team of client service representatives that will be there long after the product is installed. Our exceptional lifetime warranties and 100 percent satisfaction guarantee make us a leader in this industry. Every day, we’ll continue our mission to offer and install the finest quality products that allow homeowners to improve their homes and their lives.”
